Terry R. Yoffe, Executive Coach –TRY Coaching – Power of Being Fearless
Can you remember the last time you missed an opportunity, perhaps a new job offer that you didn’t take, because of fear or self-doubt about your ability to do the job? Or a time when you wanted to speak up about a situation that didn’t sit well with you and again, didn’t due to feelings of self-doubt?
I know I am guilty of staying in my comfort zone, more than once or twice, with the blanket over my head feeling safe and secure and not wanting to stick my neck out when life can be challenging. However, comfort zones are great for a short time and then it’s time to step out and look life in the eye and say “OK, I am afraid and I am going to take a big gulp and step out anyway”. This perspective takes courage and the willingness to be fearless.
Sheryl Sandberg, Executive, Activist and Author, sums up being fearless quite succinctly: “If you’re offered a seat on a rocket ship, don’t ask what seat! Just get on”.
And, who knows what that ride might look like, perhaps a bit bumpy or even a bit scary as you are propelled into a new stratosphere but definitely an opportunity to test your ability in facing your fears and moving forward.
As an executive and business coach, more often than not, my clients, who are in leadership positions, struggle with their fears every day. We all have fears and once we acknowledge them, we can identify what they are, how do they hold us back from achieving what we need to do and how to move through them. The first step is being willing to look at one’s fears and then start to figure out how to allow them to be there and work through them, discovering that it is OK to have fears, just not to let them run you.
Are you that person, wishing things could be different – perhaps that new job offer you have dreamed about and turned down or calling that new potential client you would love to work with but can’t muster up the nerve to contact?
What would it be like to have that fear — and take a deep breath, puff out your chest and be fearless? What might you learn about yourself and your ability to step into the Power of Being Fearless!
Might I invite you to take that first step?
